Buyers often ask, “Will bronze rust?” Bronze does not normally rust like carbon steel, but it can oxidize, change color and corrode. Performance depends on the alloy grade, environment, temperature, flow, lubrication and surrounding metals.
For bushing selection, the better question is which alloy suits the actual load, movement and environment.
Does Bronze Rust, Corrode or Form a Patina?
Rust is associated mainly with ferrous alloys. Bronze is copper-based, so it reacts differently from steel.
However, “does not rust like steel” does not mean “cannot corrode.” Bronze can undergo several surface and material changes:
- Oxidation: Oxygen reacts with the metal and forms surface oxides.
- Tarnish: The surface becomes darker or duller.
- Patina: A brown, blue or green layer develops over time.
- Active corrosion: Pitting, selective attack or material loss occurs.
A patina may slow further reaction, but color alone cannot show whether a component remains serviceable. Check material loss, fit, clearance and surface condition.
What Makes Bronze Corrosion Resistant?
Bronze corrosion resistance comes from its copper-rich base and protective surface films. Alloying elements change their strength, wear behavior and stability.
In aluminum bronze, aluminum helps form an adherent aluminum-rich oxide layer. Nickel and iron modify mechanical properties and microstructure. Nickel aluminum bronze corrosion resistance is therefore valuable in demanding marine and industrial parts.
The alloy name is not a guarantee. Chemistry, casting method, section thickness and heat treatment affect microstructure. Water chemistry, temperature and velocity influence the film. Select a complete grade and applicable specification.
Which Bronze Alloy Has Better Corrosion Resistance?
There is no “most corrosion-resistant bronze” for every application. Selection depends on the exposure, load, speed, shaft material and lubrication.

C95800 is associated with seawater service, but it is not automatically better than C95400 or C95500. Consider the drawing, ASTM or EN standard, casting condition, mechanical requirements and actual medium.
The Copper Development Association lists C95800 for bushings, marine hardware, shipbuilding and saltwater-related service. Bronze corrosion in seawater still depends on flow, oxygen, deposits and galvanic contact.

Why Can a Bronze Bushing Still Corrode?
Even a corrosion-resistant bronze bushing can fail when its grade or design does not match the working conditions. Risks include:
- Galvanic corrosion: Dissimilar metals in a conductive fluid can accelerate attack on one part.
- Erosion-corrosion: High velocity, solids or turbulence can damage the protective film.
- Cavitation: Repeated bubble collapse near pumps or propellers can damage the surface.
- Crevice and deposit conditions: Tight gaps, deposits and stagnant zones can create a different local chemistry.
- Selective phase corrosion: An unsuitable microstructure or heat-treatment condition can make certain phases more vulnerable.
- Wear-corrosion interaction: Poor lubrication, clearance or alignment can repeatedly remove the film.
Compatibility lists require caution. Concentration, temperature, contamination and velocity can change performance. “Suitable for seawater” is not final approval.
How to Specify a Corrosion-Resistant Bronze Bushing
Selection should start with the part and service conditions, not a broad request for “corrosion-proof bronze.” Provide:
- part drawing, dimensions and quantity;
- required bronze grade and material standard, if specified;
- fluid, chemical or outdoor exposure;
- concentration, pH and operating temperature where applicable;
- flow velocity or cavitation risk;
- load, speed and movement type;
- shaft and other mating materials;
- lubrication method, grooves and operating clearance;
- required material and dimensional inspection documents.

FAQ About Bronze Corrosion
Can a bronze bushing be used with a steel shaft in saltwater?
It may be possible, but review galvanic coupling, shaft protection, clearance, lubrication and water conditions. The bronze grade alone is insufficient.
Does a green surface mean a bronze bushing has failed?
Not necessarily. A green surface may be a corrosion product or patina, but appearance alone is insufficient. Check dimensional loss, pitting, cracking, fit, clearance and the condition of the mating shaft before deciding whether the bushing can remain in service.
