Bronze vs Plastic Bushings: How to Choose for Load, Temperature and Maintenance

Bronze and plastic bushings both support rotating, oscillating or sliding parts while reducing direct contact between a shaft and housing. Neither material is automatically better. The right choice depends on load, motion, temperature, lubrication, shaft condition, environment, size and production quantity.

For heavy-duty equipment, large replacement parts and drawing-based components, a custom bronze bushing is often the stronger direction. Plastic may be more suitable when low weight, low noise, corrosion resistance or operation without external grease is the priority. A meaningful bronze vs plastic bushings comparison must therefore begin with the actual material and working conditions—not the material name alone.

Bronze and Plastic Bushings Are Not Single Materials

“Bronze bushing” may describe several different structures. A cast bronze bushing has a dense copper-alloy body machined to the required dimensions. An oil-impregnated sintered bronze bearing contains connected pores that store lubricant. A graphite-plugged oilless bushing uses solid-lubricant inserts in a machined bronze body. These products do not share the same load, speed or lubrication limits.

Plastic bushings are also a material family. Nylon, POM or acetal, PTFE-based compounds, PEEK and fiber-reinforced polymers behave differently under heat, pressure, moisture and chemicals. Metal-polymer composite bearings form another category and should not be treated as solid plastic.

Bronze is often the practical choice for mining machinery, hydraulic equipment, hydropower units, cement equipment and other applications involving heavy load, shock, large diameters or non-standard geometry. Tin bronze bushings may suit wear-resistant sliding positions, while aluminum bronze bushings may be considered where greater strength, impact resistance or corrosion performance is required.

Plastic can be the better choice for light mechanisms, quiet equipment, clean systems and applications where grease is undesirable. It may also reduce weight and unit cost in high-volume production. However, “plastic” is not a specification. The exact polymer, reinforcement, temperature limit, PV limit, mating shaft and test data must be confirmed.

Cost should be evaluated across the complete bearing position. Unit price alone does not include tooling, shaft preparation, lubrication, downtime, inspection or replacement frequency. For custom and maintenance parts, the ability to reproduce a special geometry may matter more than the lowest catalog price.

Can Bronze and Plastic Bushings Be Interchanged?

A plastic bushing should not be replaced with bronze—or bronze with plastic—by copying only the ID, OD and length. The new material can change the required press fit, running clearance, shaft finish, lubricant and installation method.

Before changing materials, review the shaft diameter and hardness, housing bore, load direction, speed, oscillation angle, temperature, contamination and original failure pattern. Polymer expansion or moisture absorption can affect clearance. Pressing a bronze bushing into its housing may also change its finished bore. A worn sample may no longer show the original dimensions.

If the existing part failed from misalignment, poor lubrication, shaft damage or overload, changing the bushing material alone may not solve the problem. The assembly and operating condition must be reviewed as a system.
