A cast bronze bushing may begin as an individual centrifugal casting or as a section cut from continuous cast bronze tube. Both routes can produce reliable parts, but they create different blanks and suit different dimensions, quantities, and machining plans.

How the Two Casting Routes Produce Different Bronze Blanks
Centrifugal Casting Produces Individual Hollow Blanks
In centrifugal casting, molten bronze enters a rotating cylindrical mold and solidifies against the mold wall, creating a hollow round casting. The bore, OD, faces, flange, grooves, and other features are then machined to the approved drawing. Adequate stock must remain for surface cleanup and dimensional control.
Because each cycle produces an individual blank, centrifugal cast bronze suits custom sizes, replacement parts, small batches, thick walls, and large diameters. It can also avoid removing the center of a large solid bar when the finished component is hollow.
Continuous Casting Produces Long Tubes and Bars
In continuous casting, molten alloy enters a cooled die and the solidifying section is withdrawn continuously. The output maintains one cross-section along its length and is supplied as rod, bar, tube, hollow bar, or another simple shape.
A continuous cast bronze bushing is normally machined rather than cast as one finished part. Material is cut from a continuous cast bronze tube and then turned, bored, faced, drilled, or grooved. This is efficient when a suitable section is available or several bushings share the same starting ID and OD.

The casting route affects how the blank is ordered, how much metal must be removed, and how easily the blank matches the finished part.

Casting method alone is not a quality grade. Centrifugal casting does not eliminate every possible discontinuity, and continuous casting does not guarantee identical properties in every alloy and section. Chemistry, process control, section thickness, machining location, and acceptance criteria still matter.
M02 generally identifies the as-centrifugal-cast condition, while M07 identifies the as-continuous-cast condition. ASTM B271/B271M covers copper-base alloy centrifugal castings; ASTM B505/B505M covers continuous cast copper-alloy rod, bar, tube, and shapes. Both routes may require chemical analysis, dimensional inspection, property verification, and additional testing when specified. PT, UT, or other examination should be agreed for the part and service requirement, not treated as universal for every bushing.

Continuous cast bronze is considered when the alloy and tube section are available, several pieces can be cut from one length, or the customer needs hollow bar or semi-finished blanks.
Quantity alone does not decide the route. One replacement may be economical from available tube, while a repeated order may require centrifugal casting because its dimensions, alloy, or condition do not match tube stock. Parts that are neither rotationally symmetrical nor constant in section may need metal-mold or another casting route.

FAQ About Centrifugal and Continuous Cast Bronze
Can the original casting method be identified from a worn bronze bushing?
Not reliably from appearance alone. Manufacturing records, the original specification, metallographic examination, and other evidence may help, but a replacement route should be confirmed from the required alloy, properties, dimensions, and service conditions.

Yes. State the required machining allowance, reference surfaces, blank dimensions, inspection points, and whether material or test documents must accompany the blank.
What if an old drawing specifies an obsolete standard or casting condition?
