Bronze Bushing Press Fit vs. Running Clearance: A Practical Tolerance Guide

A reliable bronze bushing installation has two fit relationships: the press fit between the bushing OD and housing bore, and the running clearance between the installed bushing ID and shaft. Confusing them can cause a loose bushing, excessive bore reduction, overheating, or seizure.

This guide explains both without treating one tolerance chart as a universal answer. JEDBUSHING manufactures custom machined bronze parts from approved drawings, samples, and verified assembly data. We have no standard-size catalog.

Press Fit and Running Clearance Are Two Different Checks

A bronze bushing press fit holds the bushing in its housing. The bushing OD is larger than the housing bore, creating diametral interference during assembly. Running clearance is the gap between the installed bushing ID and shaft for movement and lubrication.

The tolerance limits—not only nominal dimensions—determine the possible fit:

  • Minimum interference = minimum bushing OD − maximum housing bore
  • Maximum interference = maximum bushing OD − minimum housing bore
  • Minimum running clearance = minimum installed ID − maximum shaft OD
  • Maximum running clearance = maximum installed ID − minimum shaft OD

These are diametral values; radial clearance is half the diametral clearance. The drawing should identify which is specified.

The word “installed” matters. Pressing a bushing into its housing can reduce the bore. Close-in depends on interference, wall thickness, alloy, housing material and stiffness, and assembly method. It is not a fixed percentage of OD interference. Bushing structure also matters: bronze sleeve and flanged bushing designs have different dimensional constraints.

Why a Press Fit Bushing Tolerance Chart Is Only a Starting Point

A press fit bushing tolerance chart shows the limits produced by a specified fit class. It cannot decide which fit is correct for every bronze bushing.

H7/g6, for example, is a hole-basis clearance fit used between a bore and shaft. It may suit an installed bushing bore and mating shaft in some applications, but it does not define the interference between the bushing OD and housing. That interface must be specified separately.

A bushing press fit calculator has the same limitation: it can calculate maximum and minimum interference after the diameter and tolerance classes are entered, but it cannot select those inputs without application data.

Important factors include:

  • Solid machined, cast, sintered, wrapped, bimetal, or graphite-plugged construction
  • Bronze grade and thermal expansion
  • Bushing diameter, length, and wall thickness
  • Housing material, wall thickness, rigidity, and bore condition
  • Steady, shock, reversing, or vibrating load
  • Rotating, oscillating, or reciprocating motion
  • Speed, lubrication, contamination, and temperature
  • Shaft hardness, finish, alignment, and assembly method

Catalog tolerances for a thin-walled bearing should not automatically be applied to a solid tin bronze bushing. More interference is not always safer. Too little may allow movement; too much may overstress the bushing or remove the required running clearance.

What to Specify on a Custom Bronze Bushing Drawing

A useful drawing separates component dimensions from assembled requirements. It should identify:

  • Shaft diameter and tolerance
  • Housing bore diameter, tolerance, material, and condition
  • Bushing OD and tolerance
  • Free-state bushing ID and required installed ID or running clearance
  • Length, wall thickness, flange dimensions, and chamfers
  • Bronze grade and material standard
  • Required surface finish and geometric tolerances
  • Lubrication features, load, motion, temperature, and installation method
  • Any machining or sizing required after installation

For replacements, do not copy only the worn bushing ID. Measure the shaft and housing bore and check for taper, scoring, and out-of-round wear.

Also distinguish dimensions inspected on the free component from requirements that exist only after assembly. This prevents the supplier and customer from evaluating the same drawing note in different states.

Inspection should follow the approved drawing. Free-state OD and ID can be checked before shipment; the installed bore and final running clearance must be verified with the actual housing and shaft. Our custom bronze bushing quote checklist lists the information needed for review.

Yes. Include a drawing list showing the part number, drawing revision, material, and quantity for each item.

Can material certificates and dimensional reports be supplied?
