How to Press-Fit a Bronze Bushing
- Clean the mating surfaces. Remove chips, grit, rust, paint, old compound, and raised edges. Trapped debris can reduce the installed bore.
- Set the direction. Mark the depth and align oil holes, grease paths, grooves, and the flange before pressing.
- Use the specified assembly lubricant. If permitted, apply a thin film to the fitting surface. Do not assume grease suits every oil-impregnated, lined, or graphite-plugged bushing.
- Support and align the parts. Support the housing near the bore so it cannot tilt or flex. Start the bushing square, with the mandrel pilot centered but not wedged in the ID.
- Apply steady axial pressure. Use a press or properly designed draw-in fixture, keeping force even across the end face. Never strike the bushing directly or use a loose socket as an uncontrolled driver.
- Seat it to the drawing position. Stop at the specified depth or flange face. If it tilts, starts shaving, or needs unexpectedly high force, stop and inspect the setup.

Post-Installation Checks for Bore, Alignment and Clearance
Do not accept the assembly only because the bushing looks fully seated. Verify:
- Position: installation depth, end-face position, and full flange contact.
- Condition: no cracks, rolled edges, scoring, shavings, or visible distortion.
- Lubrication path: oil and grease holes remain open and correctly aligned.
- Installed bore: measure the ID at several depths and directions as required.
- Alignment: check coaxiality when two bushings guide the same shaft or pin.
- Functional fit: confirm the specified clearance and smooth movement at the inspection temperature.
If the shaft will not enter or movement is tight, do not immediately force, sand, or ream the bore. First check the housing, interference, shaft diameter, debris, tilt, and alignment.
