Tin Bronze vs Aluminum Bronze Bushings: Which Material Should You Choose?

Both materials can make reliable industrial bushings, but neither is always better. Tin bronze often suits applications prioritizing bearing behavior, machinability and shaft compatibility. Aluminum bronze is commonly considered when greater strength, deformation resistance or a demanding environment controls the design. However, C93200 is not equivalent to C90700, nor is C95400 interchangeable with C95800. The best bronze material for a bushing is the grade that fits its friction pair and duty—not merely a preferred alloy family.

Tin Bronze vs Aluminum Bronze Bushings: What Actually Changes?

Tin bronze includes high-leaded C93200/SAE 660 and high-tin grades such as C90500 and C90700. Their bearing behavior differs substantially.

CDA describes C93200 as a widely specified bearing bronze with strong antifriction and machining performance. [^1] C90700, by contrast, is a harder high-tin bronze.

Aluminum bronze commonly uses iron or nickel additions to develop strength. Cast bushing grades include C95400, C95500 and C95800.

CDA lists bearings among the applications of C95400 aluminum bronze. [^2] Its strength suits heavy-duty parts, but greater hardness does not guarantee longer life. Shaft hardness, finish, alignment and lubrication remain critical.

Selection factorTin bronze bushingsAluminum bronze bushings
Typical gradesC93200, C90500, C90700C95400, C95500, C95800
Main advantageBearing performance and machinabilityStrength and deformation resistance
Shaft relationshipSome grades are more forgivingOften needs tighter control of shaft hardness and finish
LubricationMust suit load, speed and motionReliable lubrication is critical for harder friction pairs
CorrosionDepends on the exact grade and mediumCertain grades suit more aggressive environments
MachiningOften easier for leaded gradesHigh-strength grades can be more demanding

These are selection directions, not universal limits. Properties depend on the specification and material condition.

For pumps, presses, construction equipment and other heavy machinery, the useful comparison is therefore grade-to-grade. A buyer comparing C93200 with C95400 is solving a different problem from one comparing C90700 with C95800. This distinction prevents an attractive property on a datasheet from becoming excessive shaft wear, seizure or premature bushing replacement in service.

Which Bronze Bushing Material Fits Your Operating Condition?

Choose by the failure risk—not by which family sounds stronger.

  • General lubricated service: C93200 can balance wear behavior, machinability and availability.
  • Heavy load at low speed: Consider high-tin bronze as well as aluminum bronze. CDA lists C90700 for heavy-load, relatively low-speed bearings. [^3] “Heavy load equals aluminum bronze” is too simplistic.
  • Shock or deformation risk: C95400 or C95500 may suit, provided the shaft and lubrication match the harder material.
  • Seawater or aggressive fluid: Evaluate the exact grade. CDA lists C95800 for valves in contact with seawater. [^4] Chemistry, velocity and galvanic coupling still matter.
  • Dirty or marginal lubrication: Review seals, lubricant delivery, grooves, shaft finish and possible oilless designs.
  • OEM replacement: Matching dimensions do not make the materials interchangeable; clearance and shaft wear may change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can aluminum bronze replace tin bronze without changing the shaft?

Not automatically. A harder bushing may require a harder, smoother shaft and different clearance or lubrication. Check the complete friction pair first.

Which material is easier to machine for tight-tolerance bushings?

It depends on the grade. C93200 is generally easier to machine than high-strength aluminum bronze, but geometry, material condition and tolerance also matter.

Is aluminum bronze always better in seawater?

No. Corrosion is grade-specific. Chemistry, velocity, temperature and galvanic contact matter; a suitable nickel aluminum bronze may be evaluated.

Is tin bronze always cheaper than aluminum bronze?

No. Finished cost depends on grade, material form, casting, machining, inspection and quantity. Compare quotations for completed bushings.
