Water-lubricated bearings use fresh water, process water or seawater as their main lubricant. They are used in ships, pumps and water turbines, but are not simply bronze bushings placed in water or the same as water pump bearings.
Selection depends on material, load, speed, shaft, water quality and alignment. This guide explains when a bronze, oilless or Babbitt component may be more suitable.
How Does a Water-Lubricated Bearing Work?
Most are plain or journal bearings. Water enters the clearance between the shaft and bearing surface. With suitable geometry, flow and speed, it reduces contact and removes heat.
Common surfaces include rubber, polymers and composites; some use a metal shell with a non-metallic liner. Each grade has limits for pressure, speed, heat, abrasion and dry running.
A water-lubricated bushing is not the same as a graphite-plugged bronze bushing. The first relies mainly on water at the sliding interface. The second uses embedded solid lubricant and is commonly called an oilless bushing.
Is a Water Bearing the Same as a Water-Lubricated Bearing?
In mechanical discussions, “water bearing” may be a short name for a water-lubricated bearing. However, the phrase can also mean a sealed water pump bearing, a waterproof bearing unit or a water-bearing geological layer. Here, water bearing means a plain bearing designed to use water as its primary lubricant.
Where Are Water-Lubricated Bearings Used?
In marine propulsion, a water-lubricated stern tube bearing or propeller shaft bearing can use seawater for lubrication and cooling. Related marine bearings support rudder shafts and some subsea equipment, often with rubber or non-metallic surfaces.
Water-lubricated pump bearings use the pumped fluid for support and cooling. Hydroelectric equipment may use water-lubricated turbine guide bearings. One machine can still contain water-, oil- and grease-lubricated parts at different positions.

What Operating Conditions Affect Performance?
Water has lower viscosity than common oils. Load, speed, bearing length, clearance and groove design affect whether a fluid film develops. Starts, stops or loss of flow may cause contact before that film forms.
Water condition matters too. Sand and silt can increase abrasive wear, while chemistry, salinity and nearby metals can affect corrosion. Shaft hardness, coating and finish must be considered with the bearing material.
Shaft deflection, housing distortion or incorrect clearance can concentrate load near an edge. Claims such as “maintenance-free” or “heavy-load” are useful only for a specified material, design and operating range.
Water-Lubricated Bearings vs Bronze, Oilless and Babbitt Bearings
These systems solve different problems and should not be interchanged by copying only the ID, OD and length.

Bronze may suit projects needing strength, impact resistance, stable dimensions, special geometry or repair machining. For wet or corrosive service, the exact alloy still matters. Some aluminum bronze bushings suit demanding corrosion and load conditions, but corrosion resistance does not make a part water-lubricated. See also how bronze behaves in corrosive environments.
Where regular oil or grease is difficult, graphite-plugged bronze may be considered, subject to motion, heat, shaft and load. Large rotating machines may instead use Babbitt bearing components. Final selection must follow the drawing, operating data and grade-specific limits.

No. Wear, deformation or previous repairs may have changed the measured size. Check the housing, shaft and assembly before defining the replacement fit.

Yes. Provide a drawing list with the item number, revision, material, quantity and inspection needs for each part so they can be reviewed separately.
What inspection records can be requested?
Depending on the order, material composition records, dimensional reports, CMM results, hardness results and shipment photos can be specified before production.
