How Manufacturing and Lubrication Affect Performance
Cast bronze bushings
Cast bronze bushings start with a solid or hollow copper-alloy blank. It may be produced by continuous or centrifugal casting, then machined to the drawing.

Most cast bronze bushings need planned oil or grease supply. Grooves may help spread lubricant, but their pattern must match the load zone and motion. Graphite plugs can also be added for selected low-speed sliding positions. However, graphite-plugged cast bronze is not the same as oil-impregnated sintered bronze.
Oil-impregnated sintered bronze bushings
Oil-impregnated bearings are made by pressing metal powder into shape and heating it below its melting point so the particles bond. Controlled pores remain in the sintered bronze bearing. After sizing, oil is drawn into those pores, often by vacuum impregnation.
During use, the stored oil helps form a film between the bushing and shaft. This can reduce routine external lubrication when speed, load, heat, alignment, and shaft finish are suitable.
The porous structure still has limits. Shock, edge load, dirt, excess heat, or poor machining may reduce performance. Pressure, velocity, PV, and temperature limits should come from the specified grade or manufacturer, not from a general claim about all oil-impregnated bronze.
How to Choose the Right Bronze Bushing for Your Application
Start with the motion: rotation, oscillation, and straight sliding create different wear conditions. Then check load, shock, speed, duty cycle, shaft finish, clearance, heat, dirt, water, and access for lubrication.
A standard oil-impregnated bronze bushing may suit stable motion, a clean setting, an available catalog size, and equipment where frequent oiling is not practical. It can also be economical when the same small bearing is needed in large quantities.
A custom cast bronze bushing may be better when the part sees heavy or uneven load, shock, slow or short movement, or requires a large diameter, thick wall, flange, step, special alloy, close tolerance, or machined oil groove. Cast parts are also useful for old equipment when no standard bearing fits the housing and shaft.
Do not choose by load alone. A lubricated rotating part behaves differently from a dusty, misaligned joint that only oscillates. For hydraulic, mining, cement, and other heavy equipment, review the drawing and working data before changing the alloy, clearance, groove, or bearing type.
